What gives the show its distinction is the narrator’s smart and contemporary commentary. And the implausible musical that showcases them is predictably old-fashioned. There’s the bride who decides to trade her show business career for marriage her narcissistic groom, a Latin lothario who romances the bride’s tipsy chaperone a pair of gangsters masquerading as pastry chefs a ditzy society woman and her butler a theatrical producer and his helium-voiced girlfriend.Īs one might suspect, these are two-dimensional characters who edge perilously close to caricature. As he describes the musical’s often outrageous plot, the characters come vividly to life in his apartment. Serving as guide to the proceedings is a charming narrator (known simply as the Man in Chair) who alternately comments on and participates in the action. It’s the show’s clever construction that makes it so much fun. Presented locally by Celebrity Attractions, "The Drowsy Chaperone” is billed as "a musical within a comedy.” Lovers of both genres likely will find much to admire in this NETworks production about a young couple’s hazardous road to the altar. But as you begin to fall under its spell, those marginally negative descriptions are likely to be replaced with the decidedly more upbeat giddy, whimsical and remarkable. TULSA - As "The Drowsy Chaperone” begins to unfold on stage, words such as frivolous, eccentric and unusual may come to mind. ![]()
